Stepmother who caused amputation of 5-yr-old son’s hand pleads guilty, fined GHC 1,020
Efua Abeduwa pleaded guilty to the charge of causing harm to the boy at the Abura Dunkwa District Court.
The court presided over by Justice Anthony Tabiri Abebrese says he took into consideration the condition of the stepmother [she’s pregnant] and the fact that she pleaded guilty to the charge.
Second accused, David Mensah, the biological father of the boy, pleaded not guilty to the charge of abetment to the crime and has been remanded to prison custody to reappear on the 28th Of February, 2019 where a full trial will begin.
Third accused, Isaac Eduful, who treated the boy at his facility when the boy’s hand was almost decomposing, was also hauled before the court.
The Prosecutors amended the earlier charge to include Mr Eduful since they believe he played a part in the boy’s current predicament.
He pleaded guilty to the charge of abetment but with an explanation. The court rejected his explanation that he had compassion on the boy and wanted to do something to help him.
He told the court, the boy was brought to him on the 21st of January, 2019 and even though, he did not have any license he had compassion on the boy and decided to treat him.
Below is what transpired between him and the judge:
Anthony Tabiri Abebrebrese: You are not a professional doctor, why did you do that?
Third accused: My Lord, I had compassion on the boy.
Anthony Tabiri Abebrese: do you have a license?
Third accused: I only have a certificate with the Ghana Homeopathy Medical Association (he presents the certificate to the judge)
Anthony Tabiri: I don’t think this can convince me (Judge orders the certificate to be destroyed).
Anthony Tabiri Abebrese: why did you not refer the boy to a bigger facility then?
The court fined him 50 penalty units, equivalent to GHC 600 or in default serve 12 months in jail.
Curious residents who filled the court today expressed their disappointment at the punishment meted out to the stepmother after the court’s decision was announced.
Some of them who spoke to Multimedia Journalist, Richard Kojo Nyarko, said the punishment to the stepmother was too light, considering the permanent damage caused to the boy.
Meanwhile, the 5-year-old boy, according to the police, is responding to treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

The park, built a decade ago, not only encourage socialization but also promotes healthy lifestyle and culture of exercise among children.
But lack of maintenance has caused the once vibrant park to the deteriorate,according to Otecnews reporter Emmanuel Asiamah.
Today, portions of the park close to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, have been turned into refuse dump while the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly looks on helplessly.
The development poses health threats to school children and workers around.
Surprisingly, a public place like this does not have waste disposal facilities and a place of convenience; something that has significantly contributed to the indiscriminate waste disposal at park.
For the residents of the area and nearby Anwiam, Aful-Nkwanta, Fante New Town, Asafo, and some users of the facility, the Children’s Park has become the ideal place to defecate whenever nature calls.
Open defecation has become the order of the day. Diseases loom.
A library facility built 20 years ago at the park is in a deplorable state.
Developed to encourage reading among school going children and facilitate research work to promote academic work, the library has now been abandoned in view of its current state.
Reports say, all playing equipment at the park are now non-functional; they have completely broken down with remnants left on the facility.
Weeds have overgrown the library, which has now been taken over by lotto operators and weavers who are using the facility as their home and offices at no cost. Grass are growing into shrubs and flower into trees.
The situation at the park has created a congenial atmosphere for criminals in the area, and as expected, the park has now become their safe haven where all sort of criminal activities, particularly smoking of illegal drugs go on
According to Emmanuel Asiamah the “Children’s Park in Kumasi is gradually becoming a mini forest in the heart of Kumasi where robbers lay ambush to unleash terror on innocent people who use the place as thoroughfare”
The pavilion developed at the park for children to relax after physical exercises has also been turned into a centre of worship for some of churches springing up in Kumasi on daily basis. On getting to the place, one is greeted with a banner of a church: ” Power of Light Glory Chapel”

The body which is yet to be identified was found in a nearby river Subin which some traders are alleging was a ritual killing because some part of the body was removed.
The traders have expressed fear of being possible victims if the security is not beefed up in the area.
The Nsumankwahene is however set to perform rituals for the body to be taken to the mortuary.
Race Course currently hosts a number of traders who were displaced a year ago from the Kejetia
Terminal to pave the way for the construction of the Kejetia Central Market.

Video: Husband nearly lynched over wife’s false alarm of kidnapping his children
The unfolding drama of the tragic tale of kidnapping that has bedeviled the people of Takoradi appears to present fresh scene with each passing day.
In the latest episode, a diver, George Aduful was nearly lynched Wednesday following an alarm raised by a woman accusing him of kidnapping her two children.
According to an eye witness, while at her shop she “saw this private car passing by but it was speeding, and I heard this noise help me help me…”
But for the timely intervention of the police, a mob that accosted the car would have lynched the suspect. This development has led to the mob besieging the Effiakuma Police Station with clubs.
This development is happening at a time pressure seems to be mounting on the police to find three girls who have been kidnapped in the Western Region town of Takoradi.
The girls – from separate families – were taken from various locations in the town since last year and nothing has been heard about their whereabouts.
Narrating his own version of what happened, the Municipal Chief Executive of Effia-Kwesimintsim, Kojo Acqua, said “They chased the car and brought the car to the [police] station. The interrogation they had with the people in the car revealed that these are husband, wife and children.”
Explaining further the Police in Kwasimintsim, said Kahdija, a Sierra Leonean and allegedly wife of Mr. Aduful, accused his husband of kidnapping his own children.
But Mr. Aduful denies the accusation, stating that his wife’s reactions follow his threat to divorce her and elope with his two daughters.
Whiling thanking the people of Sekondi-Takoradi for the “love they have shown and what they are doing, Kojo Acqua, the MCE conceded that but for the timely intervention of the police the suspect would have been lynched.
“The crowd is so big. They are afraid they may take the law into their own hands. So they have transferred the case to the Police Regional headquarters,“ he said.
In the latest development, the Western Regional police P. R.O DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku has confirmed to Joy News that indeed George Eduful is the husband to Khadija.
She explained that after initial investigation they have realized that the man and the woman had issues hence she prevented the man from taking their daughters to school but the man forcefully took them in his Nissan pickup and later the wife joined but continued to struggle with the man.
The woman according to DSP Olivia will be charged for raising the false alarm and causing scare in the Metropolis.

Attack on our officers by Nigerians won’t go unanswered – GIS
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has set up a committee to probe an attack on some of its men by some Nigerian nationals at Budumburam at Kasoa.
Some Nigerians in a video which has since gone viral are seen preventing officers of the Immigration Service on duty to check on the resident permits of the foreigners.
The Nigerians are seen blocking the vehicle the officers are driving in with pieces of cement blocks and wooden objects to prevent the officers from leaving the scene.
The officers looked on helplessly as they could not move their vehicle from the scene as a result of the blockage.
The head of public affairs at the Ghana immigration service, Superintendent Michael Amoako Atta reacting to the incident told Starr News a committee has been set up to probe the matter.
He said the service will not “sit ideal for this to go unanswered.”

Salaga Riots: ‘Lawlessness is lawlessness, arsonists’ll be prosecuted’ – Nkrumah
“Some people have been arrested and we will be proceeding to arraign them this morning because lawlessness is lawlessness.
“Lawlessness is lawlessness and it cannot be countenanced and, so, the police and the security agencies will arrest any person who attempts to engage in any lawless activities as we go through this process and ensure that that person is prosecuted and dealt with in accordance with law,” Mr Nkrumah told Benjamin Akakpo on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Wednesday, 13 February 2019.
His comment is in response to a protest by some irate youth who torched the governing party’s office in Salaga because they disagreed with the naming of Damongo as the capital of the newly-created Savannah Region.
The angry youth set the party office and some party billboards and other properties ablaze.
They also attempted to burn some government facilities including the official residence of the Municipal Chief Executive but the police moved in quickly and succeeded in preventing the burning down of the District Assembly and the MCE’s bungalow.
Meanwhile, seven suspects have been arrested by the police.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah said adequate security arrangements have been made for the presentation of the Constitutional Instruments for the creation of the new regions.
So far the president has presented C.I.’s for the Savannah and North East regions. He will present the remaining C.I.’s for the remaining four other new regions which include Bono East, Oti, Ahafo and Western North.

Police orders pedestrian to water green grass after walking on a lawn at Kejetia
It all turned a hilarious moment for onlookers after a young pedestrian believed to be in his 20s was apprehended and ordered by police personnel to water a section of a lawn located within the median of a road linking the Kejetia terminal.
The youngster was inflicted with the above punishment when he was spotted by the police walking on the lawn right opposite the MTN office at Mbrom around 8:30 am.
He after utilizing the zebra crossing bypassed four female police officials who were on duty on the pavement and walked on the lawn at the full glare of the security officials.
After taking some few steps on the lawn in his attempt to cross over to the lane, he was called by the police and ordered to buy pieces of sachet water amounting GH 4.0.
With the water, he was made to water the grass as a way of punishment.
